How to watch this month's supermoon

The moon will be at its closest to Earth this week. Here is when, where and how to see it at its best.

A supermoon is simply a full moon that coincides with the closest point in the moon's slightly elliptical orbit. The difference in size is about seven per cent — noticeable if you know to look, easy to miss if you do not.

The best view is at moonrise, when the moon sits on the horizon next to buildings or trees and the eye is fooled into seeing it larger than it is. Check the rise time for your location and find an eastern horizon with a clear view.

For photographs, a long lens and a tripod matter more than the camera body. Expose for the moon, not the sky, and include something in the foreground for scale.
