An 8.36 m leap and a first title

Trailing after five rounds, the eventual champion produced the jump of his life with his last attempt.

The runway was in shadow by the time the final round began, and the leader had already started to celebrate. Then the last jumper on the order took his mark, hit the board cleanly and landed beyond the eight-metre-thirty line.

The measurement — 8.36 metres — was a personal best by eleven centimetres and enough for the title by three. It was also the first world gold for his country in the event.

Afterwards he was asked what had changed between the fifth jump and the sixth. "Nothing," he said. "That's the point."
