The nifty fifty is still the best first lens

Small, light, inexpensive and sharp: the 50 mm f/1.8 remains the lens every new photographer should own.

The nifty fifty is still the best first lens

It weighs less than a smartphone, fits in a coat pocket and costs a fraction of the camera it goes on. It also teaches more about photography than any zoom, because it forces you to move.

Optically it punches far above its price. Wide open the corners are soft; by f/2.8 the lens is sharp everywhere. Bokeh is pleasant if not quite as smooth as its expensive sibling.

Buy it with the camera and leave it on for a month. You will learn to see.
