The first moment is the start. Reaction times were within hundredths of a second across the field, and the two men who would fight for the line were level at thirty metres.
The second is the drive phase, where the eventual winner's longer stride began to tell. By sixty metres he had a hand's width of daylight; by eighty it was a shoulder.
The third moment is the one in the photograph: the handshake past the line. Rivals for a decade, they had just run the closest final of their careers, and both knew it.
